Historians of ancient years mention Lake Kerkini for the first time with the name of “Prasiada” and place it in the northwest part of the valley of Serres. They also mention that Strimonas River (the main supplier of the lake) was navigable up until Idonida, the city of “Nine streets”, today called Amphipolis. Thracian tribes Sintioi, Visaltes, Peones and Idones inhabited around the lake until they were banished by Macedonians in 5th century B.C. Dense forests with oaks, beeches, pines and chestnuts covered the mountains and the hills, where boars, deer, bears, huge bulls, leopards, lynx and lions lived. According to historians, lions attacked the camels of Xerxes while the Persian army was passing Strimonas River.Lake Kerkini and its swamps offered raw materials to the inhabitants, this way ensuring their survival.
Until 1928, Lake Kerkini was not permanent, but was only formed when Strimonas River brought down a lot of water. That year the Greek Government assigned the American Company John Monks-Ulen & Co to implement redevelopment projects in the valley of Serres. So, in 1932 the first dam was constructed next to the village Lithotopos, creating an artificial water bank of Lake Kerkini and, at the same time, drying out Lake Ahinou and the swamp areas in the valley. This construction was of great importance at that time and gave the land and its coastal settlements a chance to start over. Because the river transferred and placed in the lake great amounts of various materials, there was a need to construct new higher dam as well as to elevate and expand the embankments. The works were completed in 1982 and as a result the ability to store larger amounts of water for irrigation and to improve the flood-preventing protection was increased. The lake has a “pear shape”, with a crown at the dam at Lithotopos village. The maximum length is approximately 15km, the maximum width 8,5km and its depth varies from 1 to 10 m. Its surface rises and falls depending on the season from 55 to 85 km2.
